Location of queen Elizabeth national park : Named after Queen Elizabeth II of the Great Britain, Queen Elizabeth National Park is one of the great wildlife destinations in Uganda set against the backdrop of the jagged Rwenzori Mountains – the mountains of the Moon.

Queen Elizabeth National Park is located in western Uganda spanning the districts of Kasese, Kamwenge, Bushenyi and Rukungiri and is approximately 376 kilometers by road southwest of Kampala. The park’s area is 1,978 square kilometers extending from Lake George in the northeast to Lake Edward in the southwest and includes the Kazinga Channel that connects the two lakes.

Queen Elizabeth National Park is loved by many tourists because of its numerous attractions include abundant wildlife population with the rare tree climbing found in the Ishasha Sector, the biggest population of hippos in East Africa at the Kazinga Channel, over 2500 elephants and over 10,000 buffaloes thriving in its grasslands and shorelines. Other common animals found in Queen Elizabeth National Park include Warthogs, waterbucks, Uganda kobs, sitatungas antelopes, topis among others.

Queen Elizabeth National Park is also an incredible birding sites hosting over 600 bird species which is the biggest of any area in East Africa.

Queen Elizabeth National Park is located approximately 410 kilometers from Kampala – the capital city of Uganda, the entry point to Uganda for a safari to Queen Elizabeth National Park is Entebbe International Airport found in Entebbe City which is 46 kilometers from Kampala.

Queen Elizabeth National Park can be accessed by three routes depending on where you are coming from.

From Kampala, Queen Elizabeth National Park can be accessed through Mbarara – Masaka highway and the drive takes approximately 6 hours depending on the conditions of the road and the number of time spent on stopovers. This drive takes you through a surface road and there are several optional stopovers including Mpambire drum makers, the equator Kayambwe, Lake Mburuo National Park and tea plantation among others. A lunch stopover in Mbarara town (which is always part of the itinerary).

Queen Elizabeth National Park can also be accessed by from Kampala through Mityana Town, Fort Portal and Kasese using a surface road. The drive takes about 6 hours and there are a number of optional activities to do along the way including coffee tour and crater lakes in Fort Portal, on this route you will have a lunch stopover in Fort Portal Town which is always part of the journey.

Queen Elizabeth National Park can also be accessed from Bwindi Impenetrable National Park – a home to Mountain gorillas, though the Ishasha Sector (Southern region of Queen Elizabeth National Park) on a drive of about 6 hours.

For travelers who can affordable long hours of drive, there is an option of flying to Queen Elizabeth National Park from Entebbe International Airport or Kajjansi airfield to several airstrips serving the park including Mweya, Ishasha and Kasese airstrips.

Fort Portal is the nearest town to Queen Elizabeth National Park and is a drive of less than one hour, along the way to the park you can have stopovers to several cultural attractions such as Karambi tombs known for Babito Royals, The Tooro Kingdom Palace – a home to the youngest king in Uganda, King Oyo Nyimba Iguru. Visiting the palace will give an opportunity to see The Queen Mother of Toro Kingdom and the King himself stay, you will also interact with several local people giving you an insight in their local way of life, cultures and traditions.

Along the way to the park, you can also visit Amabere Caves which are located along the way.
